Located in the North of Italy, the Emilia Romagna region offers the visitor thousands of opportunities. To the east lies the Adriatic Sea with its endless beaches, while to the south the Apennine mountain range has its highest peak at 2000 metres and provides the setting for a great variety of winter and summer sports. The region has a rich economy, a well-organised government, an efficient system of road transport, a number of airports and a wide range of art cities. It is also within close reach of other major Italian locations such as Florence, Venice, Mantua and Verona. With a history dating back thousands of years, Emilia Romagna’s tradition of food and wine is renowned throughout the world. It also boasts convenient shopping facilities and unspoilt natural surroundings. Bologna is the capital of this prosperous region of Italy. Not yet contaminated by mass tourism, the city is the ideal choice for cultural interludes as well as leisure activities and relaxation.

Bologna has a number of nicknames: la dotta (the learned) for its ancient university, la rossa (the red) for the warm colour of its roofs and houses, and la grassa (the fat) for the wonderful food.
